Scope and Contents
The Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur papers includes files related to Upshur's work in the History Department at Eastern Michigan University as well as other institutions where she led workshops and lectures to continuing education learners. Materials include awards & accolades, teaching files, and papers and pressentations.
The collections is organized into three series with multiple subseries. The AWARDS AND ACCOLADES series includes Upshur's diplomas, certificates of appreciation, EMU anniversary certificates, scholarship information, retirement acknowledgement, Rackham Graduate School awards, and a Women of Excellence award.The PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS series holds copies of papers written by Upshur as well as presentations and lectures she gave at conferences and other meetings. The TEACHING MATERIALS series is organized into three subseries: Adult Learning Center of Chelsea, Elderwise (a continuing education program), and Eastern Michigan University history classes. Also included in this series are files on Ethnic Groups in China and Imperialism in the Far East.
Additionally, the collection contains photographs, correspondence, conference proceedings, and information pertaining to Upshur's faculty position at EMU. There are also multiple folders of research files on Chinese history and government, women in China, higher education in China, and WWII. Half of these materials are in Chinese.

Biographical / Historical
Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur was born in China and moved with her family to India, and later Australia, where she received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Sydney. A recipient of a Barbour Scholarship for graduate work at the University of Michigan, she studied history and anthropology and earned UM’s Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship. She began teaching at EMU as a part-time lecturer and, after completing her Ph.D. in 1972, joined the Eastern Michigan faculty full-time until her retirement in 2006.
Upshur gave three significant gifts to Give Rise: The Campaign for Eastern Michigan University. These gifts include an Endowment for the Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur Center for Civic Education in the amount of $500,000; $200,000 for the Expendable Fund for the Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur Center for Civic Education; and $300,000 for the Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur Endowment for Supporting Language Study Abroad (“Upshur Flight Fund”).
