Scope and Contents

The Ernest P. Goodrich Papers contains class notes, biography, scrapbook, clippings, Emma A. Hall papers, and commencement exercises. The collection is arrange alphabetically and is divided into two series. Records date from 1861 to 1919.

The two series that are included in the collection are: Personal Papers and Notes, and School Relics. The Personal Papers and Notes series includes one subseries of Class notes.

Biographical Note

Ernest Payson Goodrich was an alumni of Michigan State Normal School Class of 1894.

Goodrich was born in Decatur Township, Michigan in 1874. He attended Michigan State Normal School in hopes of becoming a teacher. After completing his time at the Normal School, he went on to the University of Michigan and earned a Bachelor of Arts in civil engineering.

Goodrich went on to be on of the most successful engineers of his time. His specialties were in transportation, planning and engineering administration. He was employed as a civil engineer by the United States Navy, and Manhattan Department of Public Works. Goodrich was employed in China and Columbia for city planning efforts. He was also a consultant for the cities of Cincinnati, Ohio, Norfolk, Virginia, Springfield, Massachusetts, and New Haven, Connecticut. In 1930, Goodrich was a founding member of the Institute of Traffic Engineers.

Staying true to his alma mater, Goodrich was the third head football coach for the Michigan State Normal School. As of 2010 Goodrich is still ranked #21 for total wins of a football coach at Eastern Michigan University and #4 in winning percentages.

Ernest P. Goodrich died October 7, 1955.

Ernest P. Goodrich's papers came to the University Archives with Emma A. Hall papers as well. The archives is unsure of the connection between the two people. Emma A. Hall was also a student at Michigan State Normal School. She was in school in 1861. Her papers include class notes, and letters.

Abstract

Ernest P Goodrich was an alumni of Michigan State Normal School class of 1894. He went on to be the head football coach of Michigan State Normal School. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan, Goodrich became an extremely successful engineer and consultant. His papers consist primarily of his own notes from his time at Michigan State Normal School, scrapbook, programs of class day exercises, clippings, and booklets. His collection also contains Emma A. Hall's papers. Hall was an alumni of Michigan State Normal School in the 1860s. The papers are arranged alphabetically. Records date from 1861 to 1919.
