Scope and Contents
The Association of Clerical Employees records includes materials relating to the Non-Academic Employee Advisory Council and their activities from 1964 to 1975. The bulk of the material was taken from Council binders, and contains information relating to the elections of officers and governance of the Council. The collection also includes a few newspaper clippings and handbooks published for clerical employees.
The Association of Clerical Employees records have been arranged into four series: Non-academic advisory council, Policies and reports, Handbooks, and Clippings. The Non-academic advisory council records include administrative materials that were originally housed in three-ring binders, as well as correspondence, all of which has been arranged chronologically. The Policies and Reports records include grievance procedures for association members, as well as surveys and reports regarding wage and salary data. The Handbooks series includes bound materials that were distributed to association members. The Clippings series includes newspaper clippings from local sources. The date range of the entire collection is 1962-1975, though the bulk of the material is dated 1964-1975.

Administrative History
Eastern Michigan University service staff and clerical employees submitted a petition requesting permission to organize an elected advisory council to the President of the University in June of 1963. The following November, the Non-Academic Employee Advisory Council was established. The purpose of the Council was "...to study and evaluate policies and procedures that affect all service staff employees; presenting an opportunity for them to speak on university affairs," and their activities led to the establishment of the Association of Clerical Employees.
The purpose of the Association of Clerical Employees is to develop a greater knowledge among the secretarial and clerical office professionals concerning the working functions of Eastern Michigan University. This group strives to accomplish a better communication among the secretarial and clerical office professionals with other university personnel through the exchange of information and knowledge. The Association of Clerical Employees fosters a spirit of fellowship with other EMU secretarial and clerical office professionals, this promotes and achieves professional and personal growth, as well as promoting professional skills and attitudes.
