Administrative History

The Emeritus Faculty Association of Eastern Michigan University adopted its current constitution in 1992. The Association functions to promote a closer relationship between emeritus faculty, who have been recognized for their service, the administration and the active faculty; furnish a means of continuing social contact among the members of the emeritus faculty; to provide experience and talent to advise on and to support the goals of the University; and to further the well being of the emeritus faculty and to be an advocate on their behalf. Emeritus faculty are retirees whom the university recognizes for their service.

The awarding of Emeritus status is not an automatic function at retirement. It requires a formal nomination and then approval by the Board of Regents and thus is not conferred upon all who retire. The awarding of Emeritus status is governed by the AAUP Contract with the university. The rule for nomination is as follows: Any member of a department, including the Department Head, may nominate for emeritus status a retiring colleague who has served the university for at least fifteen (15) years.
