Abstract

The materials in the Dr. Kay McGowan collection includes items related to her work with the United Nations advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples; personal items gifted from the Choctaw nation of which she is a member, and materials collection while representing the Downrivier chapter of the National Organization of Women (N.O.W.) at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Bejing China in 1995. There are no materials in the collection related to her classroom teaching and little related to her scholarship, publications or presentations.

Biographical Note

Betty Kay McGowan, PhD has been an adjunct professor teaching Anthropology & Sociology classes at Eastern Michigan University since 1997. McGowan completed her master and doctorate degrees at Wayne State University and has worked to represent the interests of indigenous peoples both in the United States and at the United Nations. She finds expression for her commitment to social justice in teaching her students at EMU. She enjoys traveling, art, sewing, Powwows, and spending time with her identical twin Fay Givens, Executive Director of American Indian Services. Married to Detroit businessman Blair McGowan, the couple have five children and four grandchildren. (From McGowan's March 2013 CV)

Materials in this collection were acquired from Dr. McGowan in the winter of 2015 by the graduate students enrolled in GHPR 633 while curating the In Her Shoes exhibit for the McKenny Gallery.
