Records in the collection date from 1928-1972 with the bulk of the collection dating from 1968-1972.
Materials are organized into two series: Michigan Education Association and Collective Bargaining. Materials in the Michigan Education Association series are arranged alphabetically and contain committee lists, correspondence, membership, clippings, bulletins and newsletters, a handbook from 1933, four yearbooks dating from 1928-1932, publicity, announcements, and photographs. There are also materials in this series regarding the Michigan Education Association Centennial Celebration. There are no materials in this collection that date from the earliest days of the organization that was founded at the Michigan State Normal School in 1852.
The Collective Bargaining series contains records dating from 1968-1972 when the Michigan Education Association was the MEA/MEAH and was petitioning faculty at Eastern Michigan University to become the union of choice replacing the American Association of Academic Professors (AAUP) as the union of representation. Files are arranged chronologically and include publicity, informational literature, and correspondence from the Eastern Michigan University Faculty Association. The Faculty Association was formed specifically to petition the use of MEA/MEAH to represent teaching faulty at Eastern Michigan University.
There are no records in the collection to document the formation of the Michigan Education Association prior to 1928 and no records after the 1972 efforts on campus. Nothing in the collection documents the organizational name changes that have occurred over time.
