The manual “Starting Point” documents the early phase of EMU students as they begin orientation and consider career options. Memos document various communication across the Office and across campus. The policy is a simple statement outlining the guiding principles of the office. The reports give a statistical account of the various alumni job placement and subsequent successes. Publicity and Press document various stories centered around the office from 1931-1981, with the bulk of documents covering the last two decades.

The Cooperative Career Planning Program series dates from 1971-1980. The series comprises records of the then pilot internship placement program: Newsletters document communication across campus. News and related documents document stories centered around the program. The referral directory gives a listing of staff. The annual report narrates the state of the program.

The Career Services Center series dates from 1981-1992 and is further subdivided into three sub-series: Follow Up Reports are divided based on college, and include the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Technology. There is also a series of follow up reports that include data from all colleges, and these have been arranged chronologically. Administrative History

Eastern Michigan University’s Career Services Center (CSC) provides a centralized service to help undergraduates plan their careers, develop job search skills, obtain student employment while attending college, and secure a job upon graduation. Services are available to all enrolled students, and most are also available to Eastern Michigan University alumni.

Now known as the Career Planning and Placement Center, the former Career Services Center is an administrative office of Eastern Michigan University. Responsible with the assistance and placement of students and alumni into the different job fields, it is an office which has a fundamental task in the school. During the 1960s the office placement seems to have centered on the Education and Business/Industry sectors. As years progressed and the school became more academically diverse the range of job placements also grew.

Leadership at the Career Planning and Placement Center goes back to the Michigan State Normal College days, with Dimon H. Roberts acting as Superintendent of the Training School circa 1911. Then there was Margaret Wise, who was Director of Placement for the Normal College until 1939. She was next followed by Donald M. Currie from about 1947 – 1950. During the 1950s the school changed its name once again to Eastern Michigan College. And by then the Placement Center had a new Director, Richard Nisbet, acting from 1958 to 1978. Steven Kravinsky is the last Director on record, leading the Center for Eastern Michigan University circa 1979.

A separate Cooperative Career Planning Program was first founded in October of 1971. At the time there was increasing demand for quality career assistance for Eastern Michigan University students. A committee was formed and the program was established. Knowing from the beginning the large responsibilities the role of committee chair - which presides over the committee and the program - entailed, the position was rotated among committee members. The Cooperative Career Planning Program aimed to place students in internships to further advance students' education and help gain employment after graduation.
