Scope and Contents

The Claudia E. Crumpton papers include material on the "Better Speech" movement and Better American Speech Week. Participants of the "Better Speech" movement worked to improve Americans' grammar and articulation. The papers, dating from 1913 to 1926, are separated alphabetically by format: articles and publications; correspondence; handbills and brochures; photographs; speeches. Copies of speeches written by Crumpton are found within the collection.

Biographical note

Claudia E. Crumpton was born in 1880 in Alabama. She taught at the Girls' Technical Institute in Montevallo, Alabama before moving to Detroit, Michigan and teaching at Northwestern High School. Crumpton belonged to the National Council of Teachers of English and served as the secretary of the council's American Speech Committee in the early 1920s. Crumpton sought to improve Americans' speech and grammar.

The Claudia E. Crumpton papers contain articles, handbills and brochures, photographs, speeches, and Crumpton's correspondence. Crumpton taught at Detroit's Northwestern High School and served as the secretary of the American Speech Committee, for the National Council of Teachers of English. Arranged alphabetically by format, the papers date from 1913 to 1926.
