Scope and Contents
The records of the Office of Affirmative Action, 1970-2009 document the office within the University responsible coordinating and enforcing the University’s Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity programs and monitors the University’s compliance with Executive Order 11246, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (as amended by the Civil Rights Act of 1991), Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments Act, the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Michigan Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1977 and the Michigan Persons with Disabilities Act of 1977.
The collection is arranged in 7 series; Action Plans and Audits, Analysis, Annual Reports, Press Clippings, Equal Employment Opportunity Committee, General Files, Reports and Summaries. The records within the series Action Plans and Audits are arranged chronologically and document the Action Plans of the University to promote diversity and protect minorities on campus as well as Audits of University compliance with the published Action Plans. Annual Reports only documents a three year period from 1973-1976. There are two files within the series Press Clippings which are arranged chronologically. The materials in these files document the Office from 1981-2001 and from 2008-2009. The Equal Opportunity Committee series includes minutes, agendas, membership rosters and generals materials that document the efforts of the Office.
The series General Files includes correspondence, committee and commission efforts, and pamphlet publications. Reports includes analysis of male and female faculty rank and salaries, minority perspectives on campus, comparisons of faculty based on rank and general progress reports. This series documents the efforts and staus of the University from the 1970s and 1980s. The Summaries series includes reports from the Black Faculty and Staff Association, Executive Summaries and additional materials regarding the Affirmative Action Audits as documented in the Action Plans and Audits series. Most of the records in this series are from the 1980s.

Administrative History
Formerly known as the Affirmative Action Office, the current Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action administers programs and activities designed to foster a diverse faculty, staff, and student body at Eastern Michigan University. The office further coordinates the University’s Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity programs and monitors the University’s compliance with Executive Order 11246, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (as amended by the Civil Rights Act of 1991), Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments Act, the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Michigan Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1977 and the Michigan Persons with Disabilities Act of 1977. In addition, the Office investigates discrimination, sexual harassment and other discriminatory and harassment complaints filed against University employees by other employees or students.
