Abstract
The Elmer A. Lyman reference collection document the tenth president of Michigan State Normal College, who served from 1900 to 1902. His papers include such materials as researcher biographies, clippings, correspondence, and publications.

Biographical Note
Elmer A. Lyman was born on July 27, 1861 in Manchester, Vermont; he relocated to Indiana in 1869 and attended the Kendalville public schools. Lyman graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1886. He worked in Kansas and Ohio as a teacher, and returned to the University of Michigan as an instructor and graduate student in 1890. In 1898, Lyman was appointed as professor of mathematics at Michigan State Normal College, and was elected President in 1899. In 1902, Lyman became head of the expanded Department of Mathematics, a position he held until his death in 1934.
