Scope and Contents

The Michigan Council of State College Presidents records include reports published and distributed by the Council as well as the Michigan Board of Education, meeting minutes, bulletins, newspaper clippings, flyers, and some administrative papers belonging to Secretary-Treasurer Eugene B. Elliott.

The Michigan Council of State College Presidents records has been divided into two series: Administration and Reports.

The Administration series includes pertinent records belonging to Elliott for served as the first Secretary-Treasurer of the Michigan Council of State College Presidents and was the President of Michigan State Normal College from 1948-1965. It also includes flyers, clippings, and bulletins, as well as a subseries of meeting minutes, 1958-1965.

The Reports series includes three subseries. The Unit cost study includes bound studies from 1964 to 1965. The Michigan State Teachers Colleges subseries includes several different types of reports relevant to education colleges, and the Inventory of physical plant and space utilization includes a two-part report and relevant correspondence. Other reports are listed by title.

Administrative History

In 1947, Alexander G. Ruthven, president of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, contacted other Michigan state college presidents inviting them to meet to consider common problems and confer about matters of statewide concern in public higher education. In 1952, the Council was formally organized; the Chairmanship was to be rotated annually among the presidents, with the first being John A. Hannah of Michigan State College. Eugene B. Elliott of Michigan State Normal College was the first Secretary-Treasurer.
