Scope and Contents

The records of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity contains correspondence, programs, meeting minutes, and newspaper clippings of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Eastern Michigan University. Records span from 1986 until 2011. The collection is arranged into four series: Administrative Files, Convention, Events, and Press.

The Administrative Files series contain forms, constitution and bylaws, correspondence, general files, meeting minutes, membership applications, membership lists, memos amd officer reports. Convention series includes materials such as programs and notes, and minutes. The Events series contains event programs, and event fliers. There is one group photograph, in which the fraternity members are not identified. The Press series contains newspaper clippings and The Sphinx the official Alpha Phi Alpha journal.

Administrative History

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded in 1906 on the campus of Cornell University so that incoming African American students could, together, help ensure that they would survive the racially hostile learning environment and remain enrolled at Cornell. The Epsilon Eta Chapter at Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1959 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009.

The mission statement of the Fraternity indicates that it "Develops Leaders, Promotes Brotherhood and Academic Excellence, While Providing Service and Advocacy for Our Communities." The objectives of the Chapter is "to stimulate the ambition of its members, to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual."
