Scope and Contents

The Madrigal Singers Collection contains information on concerts, history, scrapbooks, clippings, news releases, workshops, conventions, and choir tours. The collection is arranged alphabetically and divided into five series. Records date from 1899 to 1992.

The five series that are included in the collection are: Performances; Photographs; Program Administration; Publicity and Outreach; and Tours. The Performances series includes four sub series of Church Performances, Community Performances, Madrigal Concert Programs and University Performances. The Program Administration series includes two sub series of Correspondence and Scrapbooks. The Publicity and Outreach series includes one sub series of Clippings.

Administrative History

The Madrigal Singers program was founded at Eastern Michigan University in 1965 by long time director Emily Lowe. The Madrigals are a small, elite group of vocalists who specialize in performance 16th century music known as the madrigal. The madrigal genre is known for its intricate harmonies, many voice parts, and for being a cappella. The Eastern Michigan University Madrigal Singers performed at countless university and community events. The Madrigals were also given the opportunity to tour the world performing in New England, Northern Michigan, Ireland, Great Britain, Hong Kong and China.

Abstract

The Madrigal Singers at Eastern Michigan University was an elite group of singers who specialized in the 16th century song form of the madrigal. The small group of no more than twenty singers was given the chance to perform not only all around the Ypsilanti area, but around the world. The collection is arranged alphabetically and is divided into five series. The five series that are included in this collection are: Performances; Photographs; Program Administration; Publicity and Outreach; and Tours. Records date from 1899 to 1992.
