Scope and Contents

The Pi Gamma Mu Society collection contains information on certificates, constitution and byalws, meeting minutes, member information, national ritual, receipts, correspondence, events and programs, and newspaper clippings. The collection is arranged alphabetically.

The collection is divided into two series. The Administration and History series contains information on certificates, constitution and bylaws, meeting minutes, membership cards, member information forms, membership lists, national ritual, and receipts. Meeting minutes is its own series and is divided into chronological files that date from 1935-1938, 1939-1947, and 1947-1955. The second series, Publicity and Outreach contains information on correspondence, events and programs, and newspaper clippings.

The collection records date from 1926-1965.

Administrative History

Pi Gamma Mu Society was founded in 1924 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Pi Gamma Mu is one of the oldest honor society in social sciences. Social Sciences as defined by Pi Gamma Mu's constitution include the disciplines of history, political science, sociology, anthropology, economics, psychology, international relations, criminal justice, social work, social philosophy, history of education, and human geography.

The Michigan Alpha Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu at Michigan State Normal College, now known as Eastern Michigan University, was established in 1932. To become a member a student needed to complete 20 credit hours and have a "B" average in the social sciences. The mission of Pi Gamma MU is to encourage and promote excellence in social sciences and to uphold the ideals of scholarship and service.
