Administrative History
The Women's Association of Eastern Michigan University was founded in November of 1914 by female faculty members in order to pursue professional, political, civic, cultural, philanthropic, and social activities. In December of 1914 the decision was made to call the group the Contemporary Club, though in 1925 the name was changed to the Faculty Women's Club. The Association joined with the Wayne State University Women's Commission on the Status of Women in 1972 in order to protest sex discrimination, and eventually the Eastern Michigan University Women's Commission was formed. The organization was also instrumental in establishing the Women's Studies program. In 1977 membership was expanded to include any female employees of the University and the name was changed to the Eastern Michigan University Women's Association.
