Scope and Contents
The Department of Mathematics records contains files from the department from 1987 to 2001 and are organized into two series: Office Files and Activities and Procedures. The first series, Office Files, contains correspondence to and from the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Provost of Eastern Michigan University and faculty, as well as files pertaining to academic affairs and the running of the department. The series contains subseries of files for communication with the Dean, Provost and faculty, they are organized by year. The second series, Activities and Procedures, contains information about the Department of Mathematics, including events held, degree requirements, newsletters and records of groups organized under the department, as well as faculty evaluation procedures and other evaluation documents.
The collection documents the department after it was relocated to Pray-Harrold from Pierce Hall in 1986. From 1987 to 1989, Ira Wheatly served as the Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences until the position was given to Barry Fish in 1990. Many of the files in this collection are memos and other correspondence to and from the Dean, discussing many issues including the proposed division of the College of Arts and Sciences into the College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Arts among other topics. There are no materials in the collection that document the department prior to 1987.

Administrative History note
One of the primary courses being offered by the Michigan State Normal School, Mathematics was considered foundational for those entering the field of education. Students were both required to sit for an exam in arithmetics as well as complete courses in mathematics to receive the two-year teachers certification. The first record of a Department of Mathematics appears in the 1895-96 Michigan State Normal School Yearbook and it is one of the oldest departments in the University. It currently resides in the College of Arts and Sciences and offers courses at the baccalaureate and master's degree levels. Courses are taught in mathematics; mathematics for elementary, middle school and secondary education; and statistics and actuarial science.

Abstract
The Department of Mathematics records contains files dating from 1986 to around 2001. This collection contains files of correspondence to and from the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Provost of Eastern Michigan University pertaining to the Department of Mathematics as well as records of procedures and activities of this department. This collection provides an in depth look at the inner workings of this department during the late 1980s through personal communications such as memos and informational records such as meeting minutes, and budget proposals. The Department of Mathematics is organized under the College of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Michigan University. The department was housed in Pierce Hall until 1986, when the building was renovated and many of the offices moved; the Department of Mathematics was relocated to Pray-Harrold. The records in this collection date from that point on, and give insight into what was happening in the department after it was relocated. It does not contain materials prior to 1986. The Department of Mathematics has been on the campus since the 1895-96 academic year.
