Scope and Contents

The Phi Alpha Theta Society and the Student History Organization collection contains information on the organizations, membership, news clippings, the Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference, a Walking Tour of Detroit, chapter resolutions and bylaws, correspondence, event flyers and meeting minutes and agendas. The collection is divided into two boxes, each box arranged alphabetically. The organization information, membership, and correspondence information is further subdivided.

The Organization information series includes booklets, Living History Club, organization status reports, and student history association. The Membership series includes certificates, initiation and ritual, and membership and officers. Correspondence series is divided into chronological files that date from January 1983-January 1989, January 1999-October 1999, February 2000-July 2011, and a few undated correspondences.

Records range from 1941-2011. The bulk of information ranges from 1980-1988, and 2000-2011.

Administrative History

Phi Alpha Theta is an international honor society in history. The society was founded at the University of Arkansas on March 17, 1921. Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. Phi Alpha Theta is the largest accredited organization in the Association of College Honor Societies. Alpha Beta Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta is located at Eastern Michigan University. The chapter was founded in 1985 but died out during the 1991-1992 school year. The chapter was re-established in 1998.

The Student History Association is open to anyone; it promotes historical awareness and engenders the desire to learn more about history as a discipline, as well as enjoying its many forms.

Abstract

The Phi Alpha Theta collection documents the activities of the Alpha Beta Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta and other student history organizations on Eastern Michigan University's campus. Phi Alpha Theta was found in 1921 on the University of Arkansas campus. The Alpha Beta Mu Chapter at Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1985 but died out in the 1991-1992 school year. It was re-established in 1998. The collection is arranged alphabetically in two boxes. The organization information, membership and correspondence information are further subdivided. Records date from 1941-2011 with the bulk of the records dating from 1980-1988, and 2000-2011.
