Scope and Contents

The M. Thelma McAndless Distinguished Professor Chair in the Humanities records provide information on most scholars who have held the chair since 1988, in the form of newspaper clippings, biographical material, manuscripts, and notices of courses offered and lectures presented. These scholars have come from a wide variety of backgrounds and fields within the Humanities. It also includes administrative material related to the role, such as nomination forms, biographical material on McAndless and overviews of the Chair's position.

Administrative History

The M. Thelma McAndless Distinguished Professor Chair in the Humanities was established in EMU's College of Arts and Sciences in 1985 through a $150,000 bequest from the estate of McAndless, who was a 1925 EMU alumna and a faculty member in EMU's Department of English Language and Literature. In her will, she directed that the income from her bequest be used to augment compensation of distinguished artists and scholars in the humanities, brought to campus by special appointment for an average of one semester.

Abstract

This collection contains material related to the M. Thelma McAndless Distinguished Professor Chair in the Humanities (1988-2012). It includes newspaper clippings and biographical information about many individual holders of the Chair, notices of courses offered and lectures presented during their term at EMU, as well as nomination forms and paperwork, biographical information about McAndless and the history of the Chair, and publicity material for fundraising events.

Arrangement of materials

The collection is organized into two series: 1. Chair holders, which contains items related to individuals who have held the position; 2. Administrative files, which contains paperwork and forms for nominations for the position, a brief history of the Chair, and publicity and outreach material.

University Archives continues to add materials to the collection. To reflect additions, edits to the finding aid will occur at the end of each calendar year.
