Scope and Contents
The Undergraduate Symposium records include materials used in the planning and publicizing of the Undergraduate Symposiums since 1981.
The Undergraduate Symposium records have been divided into four series: Communications, Content, Programs and Memorabilia. The Communications series includes materials published and distributed by the Undergraduate Symposium, including publicity and planning materials, clippings and news releases, pamphlets and newsletters, and memorabilia items. The Contents series includes materials that were submitted and/or presented at the Undergraduate Symposium. This material is dated from 1980 to 1981, and was part of the first Symposium. The Programs series includes the finished and bound programs for the symposiums from 1982 to 2011. It should be noted that working copies of the programs are included in the Communications series, as part of the Publicity materials subseries.The Video Tapes series includes informational videos about the Undergraduate Symposium.

Administrative History
Eastern Michigan University's Undergraduate Symposium is an annual showcase of undergraduate student academic excellence. Students present at the event under the mentorship of faculty sponsors. The Symposium features oral presentations and poster displays on diverse topics of research representing academic disciplines from across the University.
The first symposium was held in 1981, with funding from the Parents' Association and leadership from Ira M. Wheatley, then department head of History and Philosophy. 17 students sponsored by 19 faculty members represented nine departments of the College of Arts and Sciences. Later symposiums added luncheons, keynote speakers, and poster displays by students, and the Colleges of Education, Technology, Business, Health and Human Services have also added participants.
