Scope and Contents

The Center for Community Education records include news releases, clippings, pamphlets, brochures, newsletters, and evaluation reports.

The Center for Community Education records have been divided into two series: Communications and Annual Evaluations. The Communications series includes any materials published and distributed by the program, as well as relevant news clippings. The Annual Evaluation series includes the bound program evaluations from 1972 to 1982.

Administrative History

The Center for Community Education activities includes academic programs for school age children (K- 12) and programs for adults. This organization was established at Eastern Michigan University in 1969 in the Department of Leaderships and Counseling and was one of the first in the nation. The program was funded with eighty-five other university and state departments by the C.S. Mott Foundation

From a 1983 brochure, "Community Education is a philosophical concept which serves the entire community by providing for all of the educational needs of all its community members. It uses the local school to serve as the catalyst for bringing community resources to bear on community problems in an effort to develop a positive sense of community, improve community living and develop the community process toward the end of self-actualization."

Abstract
