Administrative History

Plans for Urban Education Alliance (UEA) at Eastern Michigan University began in the early 1980s. The goal of the UEA was to improve the education system in urban areas, specifically for Detroit and then President of EMU, John W. Porter, was instrumental in the establishment of the UEA. Another main focus was preparing educators for the challenges that face many teachers in urban school districts. The Urban Teacher Program was developed specifically for that focus.

The Urban Education Alliance also developed a distinguished chair speaker series for experts to come to Eastern Michigan University and speak about education in the urban setting. The speaker series has since been named the Porter Chair Speaker Series after the former President.
