Biographical / Historical

Lewis E. Profit was born December 8, 1924 in Elkand Township, County of Tuscola, Michigan. He attended two different rural schools, first the Bird School and then the Winton School. In 1937, the rural school closed and students were bussed to Cass City School in Cass City, Michigan, where Profit finished his K-12 education. Profit attended Central Michigan University from 1942 until his enlistment in the marines in 1943. A shoulder injury prevented Profit from being deployed overseas and he was discharged in March of 1944. He worked at both GM and a shoe store, before returning to Central Michigan in 1946 to finish his undergraduate degree. Profit married Maxine Merrrit in June of 1948 and they had four children. Shortly after the wedding, Proft was hired as the Asistant Director of Keeler Union at Central Michigan. He decreased his academic load to take the position and delayed his graduation until 1948. In 1954, Profit became the Director of McKenny Hall at Michigan State Normal College. In 1956, Profit was given the position of Director of Self-Liquidating Projects at the college, which put the men's and women's residence halls, as well as the union, under Profit's direction. Profit became Controller in 1959, and then Vice-President of Business and Finance, a position he held until his resignation in 1974. Profit went on to serve as Superintendent of Lincoln Schools and then Vice President for Business Affairs at Lake Superior State College in 1977. Profit passed away in February of 2002.
