HAAB'S Memorabilia collection
Abstract
Haab's restaurant founded in 1934 and located on the corner of Michigan Avenue and North Huron in Ypsilanti was a mainstay in Ypsilanti dining and a central location for University faculty, staff and administrators to gather until March 2022 when they closed the buisness. Originally owned by the Haab's brothers the business was sold to Mike Kabat and son Dave Kabat who cited "the difficulty in keeping the restaurant afloat in the midst of staffing shortages and reduced income caused by the pandemic," as to the reason for the closure after 87 years.
A number of items from the restaurant were donated to the University Archives because of the strong tie to Eastern Michigan University and include a signed portrait of President Harold Sponberg, EMU Cheerleaders, and promotional materials. The collection does not include any substantial business records aside from some correspondence with the Chicken in the Rough franchise in Oklahoma.
