Eastern Michigan Writing Project collection
Scope and Contents
The records date from 1990 through 2018, with the bulk of the records in the 1990s and 2000s. Roughly half of the collection is made up of administrative records including documents related to EMWP programs, grants and other funding, site surveys, and annual reports and evaluations. The rest of the collection is projects/presentations created as part of EMWP’s summer institutes, anthologies, copies of the EMWP newsletter, and some handouts and resources for teachers.
The ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS series contains files relating to summer institutes and other events, NWP funding, other grants, and annual site surveys. These have been kept in original order. They are arranged chronologically by academic year (for example, fall 1990 – summer 1991, etc.). This series also contains the following non-chronological files: Brochures, Correspondence, Eastern Michigan Writing Project, and National Writing Project Site Sponsorship. Their contents either does not have a specific date or spans a range of dates. The NWP Funding Application & Annual Reports have the most comprehensive info about the organization that year. The materials in this series are organized how they were donated to the Archives.
The TEACHING MATERIALS & RESOURCES series series is comprised of various articles and other handouts relating to teaching writing. Some were created by EMWP or NWP affiliates, though the majority are from other sources and were used as resources for EMWP programing.
The EMWP PUBLICATIONS & PROJECTS series contains projects and presentations from EMWP Institutes and are arranged thematically. They date between 1992 and 2007, with most falling in the 1997 to 2006 category. This series includes several anthologies and a portfolio created as part of the summer institutes as well as EMWP newsletters from 1993 to 2006. It also includes a subseries of newspaper clippings and other recognitions given to EMWP.

Biographical / Historical
The Eastern Michigan Writing Project (EMWP) is an associated site of the National Writing Project (NWP), an organization founded in 1974 which aims to improve the teaching of writing and the use of writing as a learning tool across the curriculum. Their “teachers-teaching-teachers” model of professional development enables effective teachers to share their knowledge and best practices through a range of professional development programs. Originally, the Eastern Michigan Writing Project was connected solely with the Ann Arbor Public Schools but became inactive in the mid-late 1980s. In 1991 it was revitalized on Eastern Michigan University’s campus. The EMWP hosted several different Institutes during the summer involving kindergarten through university teachers from a variety of disciplines, professional development workshops, and school-year in-service coaching programs. For the students, EMWP offered the Inkstains Summer Writing Camps, the Write-Link Youth Writing Camp, and the Family Literacy Initiative. Many of these programs continue to the present day.
