The Normal Lyceum Literary Society was an organization with both student and faculty participants that was founded at Michigan State Normal College in 1853. It was the first student organization at the College, and remained the only one for many years. In the 1880-81 academic year, the number of participants had grown, making activities cumbersome. The Stoic Society records documents the Stoic Society at Eastern Michigan University from 1909 until 2015. The Stoic Society has grown with the University and currently offers twelve scholarships and loan funds commemorating outstanding faculty members.
