Biographical Note

Annabelle Sumera who died in 2005 was a 1942 graduate of Michigan State Normal School and 1964 teacher of the year. She was a longtime resident, a principal, and elementary school teacher in Birmingham, Michigan before retiring to write poetry and childrens books, rhymes, and short stories. Sumera has donated $153,000 gift towards Early Childhood Education Programs, the Halle Library and the College of Education. With her donation, Eastern Michigan University has enhanced the Alcove and established an elementary education classroom in the John W. Porter Building.
