Dr. Jose Angel Flores collection
Abstract
Materials in the Dr. Jose Angel Flores collection were collected by alumni Flores during the protests on the campus of Eastern Michigan University (EMU) organized by the Chicano Student Associaiton (CSA) between November, 1972 and March, 1973 to support the United Farm Worker (UFW) Lettuce Boycotts. Flores was a member of the CSA from 1971-1975 and president of the student organization from 1972-74. Born in North Texas, Flores moved to Michigan in 1955 with his family who were migrant farm laborers. He was the first of his siblings to graduate from college and was recruited to attend EMU by Carlos Falcon who was hired by the University to recruit students that could take advantage of Equal Education Opportunity Grants. Flores lives in Grand Rapids and serves on the Grand Rapids Public School Board (his term expires December 31, 2018) after serving the district in the classroom and as an adminsitrator for more than 30 years and continues to serve as a community activist.
