Abstract

Electa Jane (Jennie) Pease D'Ooge diaries and letters is an almost daily chronology from 1886-1937 of life in Ypsilanti, Michigan of the D'Ooge family. Electa Jane (Jennie) Pease was married to Benjamin D'Ooge the 25th of June 1885 and the couple moved to Ypsilanti, MI shortly after when Benjamin took a faculty position teaching Latin at the Michigan State Normal School. Chronicled in the diaries are the lives of the couples four children, Ida, Helen, Leonard, and Benjamin, their subsequent marriages and the birth of their children; travel to Europe in 1899-1901 and 1908-1909; family vacations to Charlevoix where they had a summer cottage; and social engagements with the other faculty at the Michigan State Normal College. Also included in the collection is a date book from 1857, and letters collected by Galusha Jackson Pease, Jennie's father. It is an extensive recollection of life in Ypsilanti, including the impact of major national and world events, but also the minutia of life at the turn of the 20th century, with each diary including family photographs, clippings, fabric samples, and other items identified as important enough to save in the pages of her diaries.

Biographical note

Electa Jane (Jennie) Pease D'Ooge was born 23 March 1857 in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Galusha Jackson Pease (1815-1894) and Mary J. Deuel (1832 - 1860). The family relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan in the 1860s, where her father co-owned the firm Pease & Fleming with Edward Fleming on South Main Street in Ann Arbor dealing in hardware, stoves and tinware.

Jennie Pease was married to Benjamin D'Ooge the 25th of June, 1885 and the couple moved to Ypsilanti, MI shortly after when Benjamin took a faculty position teaching Latin at the Michigan State Normal School. They lived on Forrest Avenue where they raised four children: Ida, Helen, Leonard, and Benjamin. Twice members of the family travelled to Europe while Benjamin completed studies in areas of antiquity. The first trip was made by both husband and wife along with their four children from 1899-1901 while they lived in Bonn, Germany; the second trip was just husband and wife and their youngest child Benjamin from 1908-1909 when they lived and travelled primarily in Italy.

While Benjamin taught at the College, Jane was managing the household, raising their children and keeping a daily journal starting in 1886. These daily journals chronicle the family's everyday life, but also Benjamin's academic career and the ways in which she supported his work as a scholar and teacher. The family had a cottage in Charlevoix, Michigan, which was detailed in the daily journals.

She died in Ypsilanti on the 10th of December 1937. Benjamin moved to Pennsylvania after her death to be closer to his children, and died in 1940 on March 7th.
