Administrative History
In 2007, the Eastern Michigan University College of Business created Ethos Week and the Ethos Honor Society, the first of its kind in the nation, centered around a newly released Ethos Statement for the College of Business.
The College of Business Ethos Statement, also the first of its kind in the nation, is used to promote ethics through six core values: integrity, honesty, trustworthiness, respect, learning, and work ethic. Community members foster the College of Business ethos through behavior growing from these values. The Ethos Statement is reinforced every semester in each course as well as during Ethos Week. Ethos Week, an annual week-long event, is meant to raise awareness of ethical considerations in a variety of business and personal contexts.
During Ethos Week business leaders from around the country conduct lectures on a variety of ethical topics, ranging from “Ethics in Marketing,” “Ethics in the Media," to “Corporate Social Responsibility.” At the end of Ethos Week, a luncheon is held to commemorate the weeks events. At the Ethos Week Luncheon students, faculty, alumni and business people are inducted into the Ethos Honor Society. The Ethos Honor Society was developed by the College’s students and faculty to support and foster ethical business practices in a professional community. The Ethos Honor Society provides forums and events for its members to discuss realities and issues of modern-day business ethics.
The Eastern Michigan University College of Business hosts an Honors Banquet at the end of the Winter Semester to recognize its students and faculty on their achievements. At the Honors Banquet inductees of Beta Gamma Sigma as well as Honors students are recognized. Ethics awards, Departmental awards, scholarship recipients, and faculty and staff awards are also given out at the banquet.
