The Department of Interdisciplinary Technology is an academic sub-unit within the College of Technology. Established in 1980, the College of Technology was founded with the intention of attracting talented students who were interested in the technology sector. The Department of Interdisciplinary Technology was one of four initial departments of the College. The first program within this academic sub-unit was the Polymers and Coatings major, started around 1982, a major drawing heavily from the natural sciences and advanced technology.

The nature of the department was rather diverse given its range of academic coverage, from science to administration. The department included programs such as Administrative Management, a pilot program between it and Washtenaw Community College; an academic minor Science and Technology, Fire Officer 1, Industrial Distribution, Construction Management, Communication Technology, Facilities Management, Aviation Management Technology and Energy Management Technology. The department offered majors, minors, undergraduate and graduate programs.
