Historical Note

In 1986, Zeta Tau Omega was formed at Eastern Michigan University as the Women's Social Club. The majority of the 18 founding sisters were TKE (Tau Kappa Epsilon) little sisters. They established this club to be recognized as an organization on EMU's campus and went to the Panhellenic Council in November of 1986 to ask permission to petition a National Sorority. After being told they would have to wait one year, the EMU's Women's Social Club decided to form a local sorority, Zeta Tau Omega. The founders had a 3 week pledge period and were initiated December 7, 1986. In April of 1988, the Panhellenic Council voted in favor of Zeta Tau Omega becoming a part of a National organization, Delta Zeta. So on December 4, 1988, the charter members of Delta Zeta were initiated as pledges.

The Gamma Sigma Chapter at EMU officially received its charter on April 1, 1989. The National Delta Zeta Sorority was founded on the campus of Miami of Ohio in Oxford, Ohio in 1902.
