Abstract

The Department of Geography and Geology records include materials from the Department at Eastern Michigan University from 1896 until 2016, with the bulk of materials dating from the 1990s to the mid 2010s. The collection contains documents concerning academic programs, administrative files, curriculum, press, and other relevant materials. It is particularly useful to the study of the department from 1995 to 2016, and for insight into administrative functions.

Administrative History Note

Geography courses were one of the first to be taught at Michigan State Normal College, and had one of the first curricula at the school. Drawing and Geography classes spawned in 1860, which led to the creation of the Drawing and Geography Department. In 1890, the Department of Geography was created, and drawing was dropped from the curricula in 1901. In 1956, the department began to offer classes in meteorology and geology. Geology was given its own major in 1965, followed by travel and tourism during the John Porter era. The Historic Preservation program was founded in 1995, and an Urban Planning program was created in 1996.
